Growing Beautiful Dahlias with Botaniculture

Back to blog

Grown in the rich volcanic soils of Silvan, at Botaniculture we take pride in growing and breeding Australia’s finest cut flower dahlias. Our farm is nestled in the heart of the Victorian Dandenong Ranges, where the unique soil and climate create the perfect conditions for vibrant, long-lasting blooms.

How to Grow Stunning Dahlias

Dahlias are fantastic summer flowers that thrive in warmth. Originally from Mexico, they love sunny spots, so plant yours where they can soak up at least six hours of sun each day.

The best time to plant dahlia tubers is in spring, once the risk of frost has passed. They adapt well to most soils as long as it’s well-drained. Prepare your soil by enriching it with animal manure—sheep or cow—and compost to give your dahlias a nourishing start. We recommend using a low-nitrogen, seaweed-based liquid fertiliser monthly to keep your plants healthy and blooming.

Planting Dahlia Tubers

Dahlias are one of the easiest and most rewarding garden plants. From a single tuber, you’ll get one large, flowering plant that will reward you with dozens of blooms. The more flowers you cut, the more new buds will appear!

Plant tubers horizontally about 10cm deep and at least 40–50cm apart. Then, resist the urge to water until green shoots appear above the soil—unless you’re in a very dry climate. After sprouts show, water 2–3 times a week. A soaker hose works best to keep water at the roots and leaves dry.

When your plants reach 30–40cm tall, pinch out the growing tip. This encourages side shoots, leading to more flowers per plant. Expect blooms in 12–16 weeks.
